Here are twelve simple tips to help you extend your smartphone's battery life:

12 Simple Tips to Extend the Battery Life of Your Smartphone

  1. Lower your screen brightness. The default screen brightness setting is usually brighter than necessary. The display is the largest drain on you smartphone battery. Turn it down to the lowest level where it can still be viewed comfortably.
  2. Lower the volume. Turn down your phone's volume level. This includes the call and message notification ringtones.
  3. Sleep sooner. Your smartphone lets you control exactly how long the display screen stays lit before it turns off and the phone goes into sleep mode. Set your phone to turn off relatively quickly rather than staying on for a couple minutes after each use or when checking the time.
  4. Say no to location requests. Most apps will ask if they can use your current location to provide more detailed and targeted info. Every time you allow the app to check your location it pings the GPS chip which reduces battery life.
  5. Turn phone off completely. If you know that you will not be using your phone for a while (in a movie theatre or meeting for example) shut it off completely rather than simply silencing the ring.
  6. Keep your phone cool. The hotter the battery the faster it drains energy. If your phone is hot after use then that usually means it is not running efficiently. Your phone can also get hot from being left in your car, on top of another hot electronic device such as a laptop. Running a phone continuously can also cause it to heat up.
  7. Turn off vibrate. You may need this feature if you leave your phone in your pocket all of the time or while in a noisy environment. The vibrating function of a phone uses up a lot of juice. If possible turn it off when you can for more run time.
  8. Turn off notifications. Most apps will have display notifications. Many of these notifications are not necessary and waste battery energy as it lights up the phone display brightly several times throughout the day. Turn off any unnecessary notifications to extend battery life.
  9. Disable any antennas not in use. Do not leave the bluetooth on all the time. Make sure that is turned off in your phone settings when not in use. This is also true for Wi-Fi but most people use that quite frequently.
  10.  Minimize the devices that your phone syncs with. Bluetooth headset, handsfree in your car and other high-tech conveniences consume energy. To maximize battery life, minimize the number of gadgets that your phone connects to.
  11. Sync less frequently. The default settings on your smartphone usually pushes email and app data every 15 or 20 minutes. Change this setting to one hour and this will extend your phones battery life.
  12. Don't leave apps running in the background. By shutting off apps that you aren't actually using, you can drastically lower your phone's workload and cut down on its power consumption.

These tips alone will not conserve that much of your smartphone's battery life but when combined they can be quite significant.
