Use this detailed step-by-step repair guide to help you replace the battery in your Microsoft Surface RT

Step 1

Locate the two T5 Torx screws on the right and left side of the kickstand
Remove the two screws and place aside for when you reassemble
Gently wiggle the stand side to side until the center lever is free, releasing the stand

Step 3

Using a plastic opening tool to release the small bezels on your tablet and remove the plastic casing covering the camera.This will take a little time as you will have to work around the entire casing because there are several small bezels along the edges.

Step 4

To remove the back plate begin by removing the ten T5 Torx screws located underneath the kickstand. Place these in a safe place for when you reassemble your tablet.
Next remove the seven T5 Torx screws located under the camera casing. Place these in a safe place for when you reassemble your tablet.
Continue to work your way around each corner with a plastic opening tool and loosen the snap-on connectors on each side of the Surface until the back plate comes off. **There is a ribbon cable connecting the back plate to the motherboard be careful to not separate or pull too hard at this point**

Step 5

Rotate your Surface 180 degrees so that the bottom of the device is facing you.
The ribbon cable which connects the battery on the back-plate to the motherboard should be visible, slowly lift the bottom of the back-plate up until you can see the ribbon.
Use a plastic opening tool to gently push the ribbon away from the motherboard and parallel to the motherboard so you can in remove the ribbon.
Separate the back-plate by lifting it up and away from the main system.
When you are reassembling the back cover to the motherboard, reinserting the ribbon cable with a plastic tool may be difficult. If this occurs for you, gently use your hands to slide the cable end into the slot until you hear it click into place.

Step 6

The battery has adhesive around it and you will need to use a plastic opening tool to release it
Gently slide a plastic opening tool underneath one side of the battery and carefully work it back and forth around all sides until the battery easily lifts off the back cover.
Test the glue/adhesive before installing new battery to be sure it will hold in place. You may need additional double sided tape if you cannot get a decent hold on the battery with the original adhesive.
